Donate: Vetted Charities & Nonprofits

Rather than reinventing the wheel, look to leading nonprofits that have been advocating for mental health for decades. These organizations offer expert resources, and might be good to approach for donations or long-term partnerships. The following is a vetted list to get you started.


American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. The AFSP has chapters in all 50 states with its core strategies including providing educational programs for professionals, educating the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention, funding scientific research, offering programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss as well as people at risk, and advocating for policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention.

American Psychiatric Association Foundation
Medical science, public education and dedication drive our vision of national awareness, personalized treatment and compassion. As the charitable foundation of the American Psychiatric Association, we: (a) raise awareness and overcome barriers, (b) invest in the future leaders of psychiatry, (c) support research and training to improve mental health care, (d) lead partnerships to address public challenges in mental health. With the backing of the APA, the world's leading psychiatric organization, our efforts are strengthened by research and designed to achieve results ensuring that we're making real impact, every step of the way.

Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA)
Anxiety and depression are common mental health issues in the United States. The World Health Organization estimates that depression and anxiety cost the global economy $1 trillion per year in lost productivity. The ADAA is an international nonprofit focused on prevention, treatment, and cure of anxiety, depression, and related conditions through education, practice, and research. The organization has a community of over 1,500 mental health professionals, many of whom contribute actively to research, education, and training.

Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective
BEAM’s goal is to help remove systemic barriers Black people experience accessing mental health resources. The nonprofit does this through education, training, advocacy and the creative arts. Mental illness in the Black community must be addressed simultaneously with systemic issues such as “inequities in the criminal legal system, economic reform, HIV/AIDS, transphobia, homophobia, racism … and other issues that challenge the wellness of Black communities,” according to BEAM.

Child Mind Institute
The Child Mind Institute is an independent, national nonprofit devoted to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Lack of awareness and the stigma associated with mental illness prevents the treatment of many children and teens.

Mental Health America (MHA)
Mental Health America (MHA)'s work is driven by its commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all; early identification and intervention for those at risk; integrated care, services, and supports for those who need them; with recovery as the goal.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network (NQTTCN)
NQTTCN focuses on facilitating mental health resources for queer and trans people of color. Their services focus on “Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Arab, Middle-eastern, Asian, Pacific islander, and mixed race, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, two-spirit, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, and non-binary people” and providing for the needs of mental health practitioners who are queer and trans people of color. Resources this organization provides include a queer and trans people of color health practitioner database, funding for those seeking mental health support, and practitioner development and community building. 

Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN)
RAINN is an anti-sexual violence organization that runs the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE. According to their mission statement, RAINN “carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.” This organization offers a variety of programs and advocacy such as victim services, public education, public policy work, and consulting. Office leaders may be interested in RAINN’s sexual assault training programs for companies and organizations.

The Loveland Foundation
The Loveland Foundation is the official continuation of founder Rachel Cargle’s effort to bring opportunity and healing to communities of color, and especially to Black women and girls. Through fellowships, residency programs, listening tours, and therapy funds, ultimately they work to contribute to both the empowerment and the liberation of the communities that they serve.

The Trevor Project
For young LGBTQ workers or family members,The Trevor Project provides crucial mental health resources. This organization focuses on issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and suicide prevention in members of the LGBTQ community under 25 years of age. The Trevor Project includes resources such as crisis intervention tools, suicide prevention trainings, and other community resources.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders, and part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation and to improve the lives of individuals living with mental and substance use disorders, and their families. It also provides SAMHSA’s National Helpline, a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.

American Psychiatric Association (APA)
The American Psychiatric Association is the main professional organization of psychiatrists and trainee psychiatrists in the United States, and the largest psychiatric organization in the world. The APA publishes guides on topics related to workplace mental health and other timely updates.

 
 
 
 

Crisis Resources

You cannot be everything to your employees, nor should you be. Below is a list of vetted crisis resources you might share with your employees and/or consumers so they can seek free, confidential support from a third party specializing in their particular issue.


Crisis Text Line
Crisis Text Line is a global nonprofit providing free mental health and confidential crisis intervention via SMS message. The organization's services are available 24 hours a day, every day, throughout the United States, Canada, UK, and Ireland.

National Domestic Violence Hotline
24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, the National Domestic Violence Hotline provides essential tools and support to help survivors of domestic violence so they can live their lives free of abuse.

National Eating Disorders Association Helpline
The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is the largest nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders. NEDA serves as a catalyst for prevention, cures and access to quality care. They provide the NEDA Helpline for support, resources, and treatment options for yourself or a loved one who is struggling with an eating disorder.

National Sexual Assault Hotline
A 24/7 confidential hotline run by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). RAINN is an anti-sexual violence organization. According to their mission statement, RAINN “carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.”

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a US-based suicide prevention network of over 160 crisis centers that provides 24/7 service via a toll-free hotline with the number 1-800-273-8255. It is available to anyone in a suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

Trevor Project Crisis Hotline
The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. Connect to a crisis counselor 24/7 from anywhere in the U.S. It is 100% confidential, and 100% free.

TransLifeline
Trans Lifeline offers direct emotional and financial support to trans people in crisis. It is a peer support phone service (note: not 24/7) run for the trans community, by the trans community.

Veterans Crisis Line
The Veterans Crisis Line is a free, confidential resource that’s available to anyone, even if you’re not registered with VA or enrolled in VA health care. The caring, qualified responders at the Veterans Crisis Line are specially trained and experienced in helping Veterans of all ages and circumstances.
