Case Studies

+ Brands x Better: Creating a Coalition

When COVID-19 hit, the economic fallout hit retail businesses first and it hit them hard. Nate Checketts, the cofounder & CEO of performance lifestyle startup Rhone, felt this pain first-hand - but also felt a duty to aid in community relief efforts.

Nate came up with an idea that could help drive consumer support of Rhone and other small business retailers, while also giving back to the community. Rhone, along with Boll & Branch, Dagne Dover, Faherty Brand, Kopari, and The Knot Standard created Brands x Better, a coalition with over 20 other startups, through which all participating brands pledged to donate 10% of proceeds to COVID-19 relief. In just 2 months, the coalition grew to 140+ brands and collectively donated over $3.8 million.

The Brands x Better case study shows us how creativity and collaboration - even in the face of uncertainty and falling sales - can benefit both the business and society.

+ Pivoting Company Resources

Another excellent example of how retailers took swift action in response to COVID-19 is the vast array of small business that pivoted company resources to begin producing supplies that, overnight, became crucial for all global citizens.

Craft distilleries and coffee shops figured out how to formulate small-batch hand sanitizer. Many others, from luxury fashion designer Christian Siriano to the Maine outdoor gear brand Hyperlite, pivoted their manufacturing line and materials into producing face masks.

This collective case study is an enterprising example of how businesses of all sizes can adapt and pivot their company resources into products and services that are crucially in demand to protect against COVID-19, and also offer a new opportunity for revenue.

+ Mobilize: Mobilizing a User Base

Mobilize is an events platform for civic participation used by over 3,000 mission-driven organizations and over 4 million volunteers. In March 2020, as COVID-19 lockdowns spread across the country, Mobilize knew that millions of Americans under stay-at-home orders were searching for ways to help their communities. At the same time, nonprofits on the frontlines of coronavirus relief work were desperate for more volunteer help.

The Mobilize team quickly created VolunteerFromYourCouch.com, a central hub of volunteer opportunities to aid in coronavirus relief efforts without leaving the home, promoting it throughout its network of 4+ million volunteers.

The Mobilize case study is a good example of leveraging existing business resources and mobilizing your customer base in order to find your unique role in making impact.
